NEPAL - FACT FILE
ACCOMMODATION
Whilst in Katmandu you will be accommodated in 3 star hotels in twin rooms with ensuite bathroom. Whilst on trek you will be accommodated in twin rooms in tea houses. This accommodation is basic but adequate with shared bathrooms. In some cases water is limited and hot water not always guaranteed. We ask you to use the water considerately by turning the tap off when shaving or cleaning teeth.
HEALTH & HYGIENE
We recommend that you bring wet wipes and anti-bacterial hand gel. In addition we also recommend that you drink between 2-3 litres of water each day and eat more than you would at home to keep up your energy levels. Stomach upsets, headaches and blisters can sometimes be encountered with the new food, but will pass quickly when treated immediately. Your guide is first aid trained and carries a comprehensive first aid but please bring your own personal medication including blister kit and ibuprofen.
FOOD/WATER
Food on trek is basic but substantial. Breakfast largely consists of porridge, Tibetan bread, pancakes, eggs (boiled, omelets), and oatmeal. For lunch and dinner you should expect to have Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, curried vegetables), stir-fried noodles/rice, Sherpa stew (noodle soup with vegetables), pasta, pizza, and vegetable momos. Vegetarians and vegans will have no problems in Nepal, however please let us know as soon as possible about your dietary requirements. Whilst in Kathmandu you will have a greater range of western food and restaurants. The tap water in Nepal is not for drinking. Whilst in Kathmandu please buy bottled water which normally costs 10-40 rupees from the corner shops. You will be provided with drinking water whilst on trek however please bring your own supply of water purifying tablets for the duration of the trek.
STAFF
You will be met at the airport by your head guide, who will give you a full briefing about your trek at your hotel. He/she has overall responsibility for the tour and makes all final decisions on behalf of clients’ welfare. He is responsible for the logistics of your trek. Your head guide will speak good English and will answer all your questions about Nepalese culture.
TREK DIFFICULTY
The first 2 days will be the hardest, involving up to 950m of ascent but they will be guided at a slow, steady pace, stopping for breaks and lunch enroute. The trek does not include mountaineering or specialized equipment. It is graded as moderate with up to 6 hours of trekking each day. The terrain includes stone staircases (with 3000 steps!) where walking poles will be very useful. Participants are strongly recommended to train before departure, including swimming, gym sessions, walking, and fitness classes. Georgina will organise 2 practice walking days in "rolling" Suffolk terrain prior to our departure. These will take place on a Saturday in June and August dates to be confirmed.

DONATIONS TO VILLAGES & SCHOOLS

In addition any stationery, books or art materials would be gratefully received at the local schools. We do not recommend that you give out sweets to children as dentists are not readily available in remote areas.
PASSPORT & VISAS
It is essential that your passport is valid for 6 months after your entry to Nepal. You will require a tourist visa to enter the country which can be bought on arrival at the airport, online https://nepaliport.immigration.gov.np/onlinevisa-mission/application or at the Nepalese embassy. In 2025 a 15 day visa cost 30US$. You will need to fill out a landing card on your arrival and departure at Kathmandu airport so it is good to have a pen handy.
VACCINATIONS
There are no specific vaccinations required for entry into Morocco however we suggest that you are covered for; Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and routine vaccines (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio). Please consult your doctor for further information
TRAVEL INSURANCE
This is compulsory and must be put in place at the time of booking. It should cover; repatriation to your own country, trekking activities and helicopter rescue in the mountains. You will be required to carry your insurance documents whilst trekking. We recommend: https://services.thebmc.co.uk/insurance
CURRENCY & SPENDING MONEY
On the day of writing, the currency exchange rate was 196 Nepalese rupees to £1 sterling. There are many bureaus and ATMs where you can exchange money or withdraw dirhams in Kathmandu. ATMs generally take visa, cirrus and maestro. Payments made by card in shops and restaurants are readily accepted although often a surcharge is added. It is best to bring US$ or £ in cash to exchange. Throughout the trek all meals are provided so you will only need enough spending money for souvenirs, soft and alcohol drinks and personal items. A budget of £200-300 spending money would be plenty for the whole trip. To give a rough idea in Kathmandu; a bottle of coke cost 100-250 rupees and a 1.5 litre bottle of water cost 50 rupees and a good meal in a local restaurant costs between £25-30.
TIPPING
We make it our policy to pay our staff well. We believe that in paying our staff properly for their experience and qualifications, in return they will be willing to work to their best standard. As a general guide US$75 per person would be ample. This will be collected in at the end of the trek and distributed to the whole team in rank order. Small denominations of notes are preferred for ease of splitting up. Donations of old equipment and clothing are always gratefully received.
RELIGION & RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
In Nepal According to the 2021 Nepal census, the country is predominantly Hindu (81.19%), followed by Buddhists (8.21%), Muslims (5.09%), and Kirat (3.17%). Please buy local produce as much as possible, talk to the locals, dress modestly in religious buildings and remote villages ie; long trousers and long sleeved tops for both men and women, never leave litter and ask first before taking photos. We endeavour to employ local staff and buy local produce as much as possible.
ELECTRICITY
Nepal uses three power plug types: Type C (two round pins), Type D (three large round pins), and Type M (three larger round pins). The standard voltage is 230V at 50 Hz frequency. A universal travel adapter that covers these types is highly recommended for tourists.
