International Mountain Leaders are assessed to a very high standard. IML is the highest trekking qualification obtainable and the whole assessment process takes at least 5 years to complete. IML Remit: In France and many other countries in Europe the law requires that anyone leading a trek in the mountains for a fee must have a UIMLA or UIAGM qualification. It is within an IML's remit to lead trekking groups all over the world, including across snow covered rolling terrain without the clients' use of crampons or ice axes or crossing glacial terrain. George will always arrange for a qualified UIAGM guide to take the lead, in terrain out of her remit.
Emergency training & first aid: Because of her extensive IML training, George can deal quickly and efficiently in emergency situations. George will be there to help organise any rescue operations whilst on trek. George is also a qualified first aider and renews her qualification every 3 years.
Technical Skills: George has also been assessed on steep ground, winter skills, rope work, day and night navigation, ensuring your safety whilst trekking. George is also required to attend Career Professional Development workshops every 4 years to keep her skills up to date.
Experience at altitude: George has led groups on many high altitude treks in Nepal, Tanzania, Morocco and Peru. She knows how to recognise the symptoms of AMS, HACE & HAPE and will advice you on your personal health and welfare whilst trekking.
Language skills: IMLs are encouraged to learn the languages of the counties they trek in. George can speak basic French.
Knowledge of culture and other topics of interest: Whilst on assessment an IML has to give several talks on topics of their choice relating to the environment they are trekking in. This ranges from weather, climate, geology, local history and traditions. George would be very happy to answer any questions you may have whilst trekking.
