Santon Downham, Brandon & Weeting Castle
Santon Downham, Brandon & Weeting Castle
This walk started at Santon Downham car park. Georgina had put an advert on the gumtree website for setting up a new walking club in East Anglia. Today was the group's first meeting and 10 walkers turned up! The group was very diverse ranging from people from Norwich, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, Sweden, Ukraine, Israel and Slovakia.

We started by walking along the quiet riverbanks to Brandon. This was very beautiful and everybody got the chance to get to know each other whilst hopping over some of the fallen trees.

Friendship cake in Brandon

Once we arrived in Brandon we had a short stop. Andrij from the Ukraine took the opportunity to share his 'friendship' cake and green tea with us! It was delicious!

Our walk continued across the Suffolk/Norfolk border towards Weeting castle. At this point the weather was looking a bit deary but the rain did hold off. At Weeting castle we were greeted by a local lady who was very eager to share with us the history of the ruin. We also had our lunch here.

Weeting CastleAfter lunch walked through a pig farm and across several fields until we met Emily's forest. The forest track took us past Grimes Graves, an early flint mine. Soon we were crossing the river Thet and Gt Little Ouse back to Santon Downham.

A great first walk for the newly established East Anglia Mountaining Club. Our next adventure is planned for Saturday 6th March along the North Norfolk Coastal Path. Route currently unconfirmed. For more details please contact: georgina@tailormadetrekking.com
